Just Plain Folks Music Awards
We're kicking off the entry period once again for the newest cycle of the JPF Music Awards. Due to the tremendous number of entries, we only do the awards every 2 years. In 2006 we received 25,500 albums and 350,000 songs in over 80 genres of music from over 100 countries around the world. We expect entries in 2008 will reach over 500,000 songs.
The Just Plain Folks Music Awards were started in 1999 as a simple way to recognize the best music submitted by members. JPF Founder Brian Austin Whitney felt the music made by the "other 98%" of the music world often ignored by the mainstream televised music awards shows deserved its own recognition. The judging criteria is based around one basic concept: Does the music move you? This one encompassing criteria has since been adopted across much of the mainstream music industry to measure the very best quality of the best music being made today. Once again, we start our quest to find the music that moves us most and recognize it with admiration, fairness and dignity (and a cool JPF Awards trophy).
The process involves every piece of music being screened and narrowed down across many rounds of judging until each genre is narrowed down to the top 12-24 songs (depending on genre size and depth) and top 8 albums. This is a grueling process that takes a large staff of volunteers 12 months or more to complete. Judges are made up of equal parts Industry Professional, Artist/Writer Peers and Music Fans. In 2006, over 8000 judges participated from all 7 (yes, even Antarctica) continents. And thanks in part to the companies listed below, it's all free to enter!

What Can Be Entered?
The short answer is any music, any movie and any music video can be entered. We honor the widest variety of music of any music awards in the world. In 2006 we gave out song awards in 67 genres of music and album awards in 81 genres of music. There is no type of music that is not welcome. We had 4 Movie/Video categories including Feature Length, Live Performance, Promotional and Short Form. This year we will add additional categories based on the numbers and quality of entries. For a complete list of categories and nominees and winners from previous awards, visit the AWARDS section of this website.
The only music that is not eligible from active JPF Members is music that has been previously entered in a prior JPF Music Awards. For a list of all previous entries, see the database at the bottom of the AWARDS page on this website.
We also have a category for Lyricists, but that program takes place exclusively on our message boards and will not start until next summer at the earliest. Watch the newsletter and message boards for updates on the Best Lyric category.
Who Can Enter?
All Just Plain Folks Members can enter their music for consideration. We welcome everything from entry level writers and artists to full time professionals. Previous winners and nominees have included famous Grammy, Oscar, Emmy and Tony winners and nominees and even some Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. They have also included competely unknown independent writers and artists who proved they could move people with their music right along side of the big boys and girls. When you enter music into our awards program, you are competing with some of the best musicians and songwriters in the world, so keep in mind that the competition is fierce. That said, we've had simple home demos recorded in someone's bathroom win major awards along with albums with a whopping 400 dollar total budget win as well. Both featured writers and artists who had a lot more talent than money or connections. We love finding those needles in the haystacks of music we receive. Browse our previous winners and nominees to see the level of talent from previous years. Or visit our Wikipedia page for a quick list of more notable finalists.
